Texas Style Council Conference, 2012. Blogging: A New Way to Fashion

Growing each year, the Texas Style Council (TxSC) Conference helps blogging fashionistas develop social-media skills and bring their style sense to a broader internet audience. It’s no coincidence TxSC happens around SXSW as many panelists are in town for other events. The conference, in its third year, was created by fashion blogger Indiana Adams, of www.AdoredAustin.com and presented by Poshmark, creators of virtual shopping parties, (they have an App for this).

Texas Style Council Conference 2012

On the agenda this past weekend: Friday’s schedule was a social gathering with cocktails, followed by a clothing swap. Saturday, a photography workshop followed by a tour of Austin’s thrift shops. Sunday was an all-day panel of speakers from around the country, held at the Blanton Museum. The conference had been sold out since January and I was lucky to get in on Sunday, the day of the symposium.

“Our goal is to connect women who love fashion, with other women who love fashion and to raise the bar in the way we all do social media.”
– Indiana Adams

These (mostly) young woman have established a large, yet close-knit social group and community of friends that share a passion for fashion. Not only are they linked to each other’s blogs, they also have close friendships outside the “blogger-sphere.” This is not the “high style” fashion we may normally think of, these woman prefer to create a style of their own. They thrift shop, find unique pieces of clothing and accessories and share their treasures on their blogs.

Besides being dazzled by fashion, what I liked most about the symposium, was the inviting, down-to-earth style of the women behind the fashion blogs. I thought the conference was well-organized. It attracted a wide audience and panel, ranging from the lone blogger to Lucky Magazine’s Digital Content Director, Caroline Waxier. The panelists shared their experiences on blogging and insights on how to manage their lives outside of their blogs.  For more on the TxSC go to www.texasstylecouncil.com

“Yo’ Man! This is an awesome Production”

I had a wonderful time at the Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s Production of Yeomen of the Guard. Across the board the performances were spot on. The singing was incredible. Reaching many comedic highs and unexpected dramatic lows, every audience member goes on an entertaining ride. I really enjoyed the full ensemble performances (the finale is simply divine)- their voices filled the auditorium with a cacophony of sound that was just spectacular. Go check it out before it closes. I highly highly recommend it.

“The Most Fabulous play I’ve seen in a long while!

I was at City Theatre for opening night of The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told and absolutely loved it. Based on the reactions of fellow audience members, I’d be willing to speculate it was received by all as a hit. Great cast, well-executed, and very funny. I also liked their display in the lobby demonstrating the protest responses they’ve gotten regarding the production. Definitely a must-see! (for mature audiences) Continue reading

1. Our Body: The Universe Within
H. J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture & Sports
April 24, 2010 – Ongoing

“Our Body!”

Our Body: The Universe Within is a wonderful opportunity to view a stunning and well-presented exhibit of the human body. You WILL see and understand the body like you never have before… regardless of your background. ALL of the body “items” shown have undergone a process which preserves and make them plastic-like. There are many full bodies shown in various ways so that you may study the many different and interrelated systems that make up the human body. There are also many exhibits of body parts: hands, feet, lungs, liver, muscles, etc…. available for detailed study. In terms of logistics: The exhibit is well lit, there is quiet music playing in the background, some museum patrons are silently studying the bodies, some patrons are quietly chatting with their friends about what they are viewing, there are some benches to sit down on should you need to rest…More at nowplayingaustin.wordpress.com

“Wow! You think theater isn’t for you? Go see this play.”

A thrillingly creative professional production. The acting is perfect – both stylized and believable, never forced. I love this script but it’s tough one. A lesser production could have been too intellectual or too emotional but this has a wonderful sense of balance. Oh it’s so good! The brilliant set and lighting design are perfect for the play and radiant with meaning. If your (or your loved ones) recent theater experiences have been disappointing, go see this play. The production does what I believe theater does best – it creates a rich world, tells a powerful story and gives you an experience to remember. And talk about beyond that night. Continue reading

Two Full A-Team Reviews: Matisse at the Blanton

* * * * (4  Stars) Out of the Shadow . . .

Henri Matisse, perhaps better known as a sculptor and an extraordinary artist, is revealed at the Blanton as a thoughtful, sometimes edgy printmaker, exploring such techniques and processes for more than 50 of his 85 years.

Unless you’re a serious art student, you don’t really have to know an etching from an aquatint; a monotype from a lithograph; a woodcut from a linoleum cut. Simply appreciate this exhibition of graphic virtuosity. There are 61 pieces of art, some as series, drawings of his children and even a self portrait. However Matisse’s narrow range focused on one of his favorite themes, nudes (mine, too), typically reclining or seated. Continue reading
