Keep Austin Artsy Podcast was produced by Beth Cortez-Neavel and Susie Gidseg. Keep Austin Artsy Podcast is a project of the Greater Austin Creative Alliance, and Now Playing Austin.

Temple/Fear and Desire mixes together two friends, two musical inspirations, A bunch of dancers, and some chocolate cake. Dance always intrigues me. it intrigues me, because everyone perceives something different while watching it. Temple/Fear and Desire are no exception. The choreographers for these two short pieces seem to have a plan that works. They each have created a short pieces. They combine them in the same night, and viola- have a short dance show. They talk with us, the morning after their opening night, about how they became dancers, what their choreography process is like, what comes first- the music or the dance, and what sort of inspiration really goes into it all. For anyone who wants to know how a piece of dance gets born, or how to support 2 local choreographers, and a composer by seeing their show- then check out this podcast. We have been warned that both the chocolate cake, and some champagne are present on stage. For the rest, you’ll just have to check it out yourself! Read the rest of this entry »

Keep Austin Artsy Podcast: Dance With the One

15 03 2010

In the few months that the Keep Austin Artsy Podcast has been working its magic with local austin arts events, we have mixed and mingled with visual art, theatre, special events, festivals, screen printing and many other mediums. However, we had yet to tackle a film. With SXSW upon us like a freight train, we were ready to delve into the world of movie making. What better way then getting inside the heads of local screenwriters- Smith Henderson and John Marc Smith, and Director Mike Dolan. All are gearing up for the premiere of their film, Dance With the One- shot locally, and born here in Austin. Read the rest of this entry »

Keep Austin Artsy Podcast: The Hideout Theatre Gets Scary with Hitchcocked

2 03 2010

Keep Austin Artsy Podcast was produced by Beth Cortez-Neavel and Susie Gidseg. Keep Austin Artsy Podcast is a project of the Greater Austin Creative Alliance and NowPlayingAustin.com.

Who knew improvers came to podcast interviews with their own weapons? While at first we were intrigued by Troy and his improv knowledge, interest soon turned to fear when Troy pulled out his arsenal of weapons and threatened murder. In his pockets….a fake knife, wrench he found in our closet and and extra tie for some improvised destruction. While usually we might be taken aback by this kind of situation, it kind of seemed appropriate here. Even Latifah got into the action of our improved terrifying photo shoot ( see above.) If you ever wanted to hear how a group of improvers try really really hard to make theatre as cool as a sports event, understand how an improv show really really gets made from start to finish, wondered what is up with all those crazy kids at the Hideout Theatre, or spent hours thinking about how cinematic elements can be translated to the stage…well, this show is probably right up your alley. Troy promises lots of laugh, intrigue and, of course, murder. Read the rest of this entry »

Keep Austin Artsy Podcast: Return to High School with McCallum High’s Bilingual Evita

19 02 2010

Keep Austin Artsy Podcast was produced by Beth Cortez-Neavel and Susie Gidseg. Keep Austin Artsy Podcast is a project of the Greater Austin Creative Alliance and NowPlayingAustin.com.

Today, Beth and I returned to high school. Her high school to be exact, McCallum Fine Arts Academy. When you enter the theatre, teacher Julie Wright is teaching a sophomore drama class. The kids are up on stage, playing improv games. The theatre is large and inviting. The teens, many of whom transferred into McCallum from other schools just to get additional training in the art form of their choice, are bright and engaging.I think it brought both Beth and I back to our own high school art glory days. We stood there for a moment and took it all in.

The reason we are back in high school on a rainy Friday morning? McCallum, known for staging difficult, but ultimately triumphant performances of large scale musicals, ( Remember last years RENT controversy?) Is at it again. This time with a bilingual production of Evita. Read the rest of this entry »

Keep Austin Artsy Podcast was produced by Beth Cortez-Neavel and Susie Gidseg. Keep Austin Artsy Podcast is a project of the Greater Austin Creative Alliance and NowPlayingAustin.com.

It’s a rainy Friday morning and we are standing in the absolutely stunning gallery at the Mexican American Cultural Center, a several year old cultural project created through the City of Austin. We are speaking with Herlinda Zamora, the Exhibits Coordinator here at the MACC. The room is high, open and inviting. The work on the walls, a new exhibit called Reflections, by up and coming artist Sergio Rodriguez, literally leaps off the canvas and assaults the senses. His pictures are brilliant and colorful , haunting and deep. Read the rest of this entry »

Keep Austin Artsy Feature: Austin Variety Show

15 01 2010

Ed. Note: Our roving reporter, Ross Scarano interviews Austin Variety Shows co- founder, Troy Dillinger, about the latest hot event to hit the Austin Arts scene, The Austin Variety Show. After attending last months Austin Variety Show, eating amazing food, drinking free drinks and getting some special gifts from “Santa Claus,” I was hooked. Not to mention the actual show, packed crowd, amazing entertainment, or feel of connectedness among an audience of strangers. If you haven’t been, It comes highly recommended. Its silly fun, but hey, we all need some of that in our lives.– S. Gidseg

AN INTERVIEW WITH Troy Dillinger

From humble beginnings, the Austin Variety Show has become one of those Austin-specific events that keeps our city unique and, of course, weird. Not only weird – televised, too. As of January 10th, the Austin Variety Show is now a publicly aired event thanks to the good people at KBVO-TV. I spoke with the Variety Show’s co- creator and MC Troy Dillinger to get the lowdown on AVS. Read the rest of this entry »
