Wanna Have Your Event Featured on TV? Austin Arts Minute Makes Ongoing Appearance on News 8.

    All About Austin Arts Minute

    News 8 Austin premiered the Austin Arts Minute, highlighting what’s happening in local arts, on September 9, 2009. The first segment of its kind in Austin TV news, the Austin Arts Minute content is provided by NowPlayingAustin.com, a program of the Greater Austin Creative Alliance, formerly Austin Circle of Theaters (ACoT), a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit that exists to serve Austin’s creative community and to celebrate its art, culture and creativity.

    “The Arts Minute gives News 8 one more avenue to provide educational and timely information to our viewers and subscribers on the diversity and variety of arts in Austin,” explains Barry DeCrane, marketing manager for News 8.  “Our ultimate goal is to encourage our viewers to try something different. By taking in a local show or exhibition, they are supporting the artistic lifestyle that makes this such a desirable city to live in.”

    News 8 Austin is Austin’s local 24-hour news station with a community focus in programming; the Austin Arts Minute idea grew out of collaboration with the Greater Austin Creative Alliance and pro bono work by Amy Layton of Hook ’em Marketing and PR as a way to connect Austinites to what’s available to them in the diverse local arts scene.

    “Having compelling favorable media attention for Austin’s immense creative community is so vital for any arts community,” states Greater Austin Creative Alliance executive director Latifah Taormina. “How else can you build the public support and participation that sustains our arts and cultural scene? And without that, where is Austin? We’re thrilled to have News8 do this. It really shows their leadership in the community.”

    Austin resident and dedicated arts philanthropist Carla Stanmyre McDonald will donate her time to host the segment. McDonald is active in Austin’s non-profit sector and currently serves on the boards of Arthouse and The Long Center for the Performing Arts.

    News 8 Austin and its parent company, Time Warner Cable, have long supported local arts through annual sponsorship of The Austin Museum of Art, Art City Austin, The Austin Lyric Opera, Austin Symphony, The Long Center for the Performing Arts and other prominent organizations.

    The minute shows on Wednesdays, once an hour, from 5 am to 4 pm, barring breaking news.

    How Do I Get My Event Featured?

    The Creative Alliance selects the events, does the scripts, provides the talent and secures the images and/or b-roll for the episodes.  News8 shoots each episode and does the postproduction. We shoot four/five scripts in a single session. This is why the information needs to be in the site five weeks ahead. News8 adds the images/b-roll the week prior to the next minute airing. So while we can get images and b-roll to News8 closer to airtime, we need to know we will be able to do that when we put the event in the script.

    Again, content is from our NowPlayingAustin site. That means event information and appropriate web images need to be in the system at least 5 weeks in advance to be considered for inclusion in the Austin Arts Minute.  Guidelines for submitting listings are in the site. At the top of the home page there is a button for SUBMIT A LISTING. Just follow the prompts.

    Therefore, in addition to making certain event listings are in the site at least 5 weeks in advance, we will also need to have on file the following for an event to be considered for the Arts Minute.:

  • Press Release for event
  • The go-to person (Name, email, phone) for more information/graphics for that event if needed
  • List of images, b-roll (digital HD) that can be available for the Minute
