The set, costume, and lighting design fabulous. The group scenes were my favorite, full of energy, visually delightful. A few fun, comedic moments added some lightness and laughter for the audience, engaging. My first opera, Bravisimo! Thank you.
Upon the opening of Act I of Austin Lyric Opera’s La Traviata, the audience is dazzled with the visual splendor of 19th Century Paris. Set and Costume designer Desmond Heeley and Lighting Designer Christine A. Binder have created the atmosphere of abundance, wealth and luxury with warm, rich colors, soft, billowing lines, and the illusory techniques of dissolving curtains. In ALO’s current production of La Traviata, the singers, orchestra, and stage direction are of such high quality that the entire evening packs moment after moment of sensory delight. Pamela Armstrong, who plays Violetta Valery has such a rich and textured vocal quality, that it is difficult to get enough of her singing. Her voice is at once soulful and lyrical and is matched with fine acting talent. There are many great performances in this production of La Traviata, but others that particularly stood out were Ann Sauder (Annina), Grant Youngblood (Giorgio), Liz Cass (Flora), the Chorus and the Austin Symphony.
And January 29th, they’ll back again with The Italian Girl in Algiers, a great tale of lust, love, longing, and intrigue that, if La Traviata and ALO’s sterling history have anything to say about how good it will be, then none should be disappointed. Starting January 29th at the Long Center.
