It is here my friends.
The season we’ve all been
Although the school calendars and the sunburn on my back would disagree, summer apparently doesn’t truly start until June 21.
But now it is upon us in all of its glory.
That being said, here’s some nice events for the first weekend of summer.
Whether you’re trying to beat the heat or embrace it, we’ve got an event for you.
When I think of escaping the sun, I think of Stephen Sondheim. Ok, that was a stretch, but how about a Sondheim revue in a cool concert hall? ACC’s choral department is presenting “Putting it Together” -a revue of the most popular songs from the man who has won more Tony Awards than any other composer. Featuring songs from Company, Merrily We Roll Along, A Little Night Music, Forum, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and Follies. Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2:30.
You can also beat the heat of the day by watching Shakespeare at night. Enjoy Austin Shakespeare and their Young Shakespeare program as they put on Troilus and Cressida at the Elizabethan replica Curtain Theatre. A tale of the iconic Trojan war told from the Trojan perspective and featuring a teenage cast of 15. Young Shakespeare provides a unique and fun opportunity for the young actors and the audience alike, not to mention a cool evening breeze. Show starts at 8pm June 23-July 3.
This final event is not at night. Or in air conditioning. It is outside in the heat of the the day. But its for a good cause! The Guinness World Record for the largest guitar ensemble ever assembled to perform a particular song resides in Poland. Yes, Poland – so grab your guitar and register for Pickin’ for the Record II. We’ve accepted the challenge to bring that record back home to Texas on June 26th 1-4pm on the South Steps of the State Capitol! We are calling for 8000 pickers. Make us proud, Austin.
